Listen to Him

Hello, my friend… so glad you're with me today. This is By God's Call — day 57, Listen to Him.

"The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers — it is to him you shall listen." Deuteronomy 18:15.

Moses is near the end of his life. He has already seen the people come out of Egypt, cross the wilderness, receive the law at Sinai. And he knows he won't enter the promised land with them. So before he leaves, he does something extraordinary: he points toward the future. He says God will raise up another prophet like him — one the people must listen to.

Notice the words closely: "from among you, from your brothers." This prophet would not come from a distant palace, nor from a foreign nation. He would come from within. One of their own. Someone who would feel hunger like they do, who would weep like they weep, who would know from the inside what it costs to be human. And centuries later, Peter, preaching at the temple, quotes this exact line and points it directly at Jesus. In Acts 3, he says plainly: this prophet is Him. The promise finally had a face, a name, a story.

But I want you to notice something we tend to skim past: "it is to him you shall listen." In Scripture, to listen is never just a passive verb. Listening to God's voice always demands a movement of the whole body. It's not just paying attention — it's changing direction when the voice speaks. It's stopping when it says stop. It's following when it says go. The promise of a prophet always comes bundled with a call to obey that prophet.

And there's something beautiful hidden here: Moses was the greatest prophet Israel had known up to that point. He spoke with God face to face, as a friend speaks with a friend. But the promised prophet would be even greater. Moses spoke God's word; Jesus is God's Word made flesh. The pattern promised something — and the fulfillment surpassed even the promise.

So today, think about this: you have the voice of that Prophet available to you right now, in the pages of the Gospels. It's not a distant voice, hidden behind clouds or silence. It's a voice that speaks clearly, that teaches, that corrects, that comforts. The question isn't whether you've heard of it. The question is whether you have listened — really listened, with your feet ready to follow.

So here is the call for today: before breakfast, open the Gospels — Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John, any of them — and read one page. Just one. And when Jesus tells you to do something there, do it. Don't philosophize about it. Don't save it for later. Obey the first thing He says.
