Hello, my friend… so glad you're with me today. This is By God's Call — day 47, He Loved First.

We love because he first loved us. First John, chapter four, verse nineteen.

Let that settle for a moment. We love — because he first loved us. Not we loved, and then he responded. Not we became worthy, and then he drew near. He came first. It has always been this way. Before your first prayer, before your first turning back to him, before you even knew his name — God's love was already there. Already burning. Already fixed on you. You have never made the first move in this story. Every step you have taken toward him has been a response to a step he had already taken toward you.

And that changes everything about how you understand your faith.

Loving God is not an audition. It is not a performance to see if you can impress him enough that he will finally accept you. It is not something you manufacture to earn your place. It is a response. It is what happens in a heart that discovers it was already loved — before it deserved it, before it was ready — and simply cannot stay unmoved by that.

But here is a trap many people fall into, and it is worth naming. We try to love God and love the people around us… from an empty pitcher. We try to serve before we have received. We try to give what we do not have inside us. And so we grow exhausted, resentful, dry. That is not what this verse is saying. The verse says the love we have comes from the love he gave. The order matters. Be filled with the Father's love first. Then serve from what overflows.

And here is the most beautiful part of this: we learn to love by being loved well. You will not love the people in your life better simply by trying harder. You will love them better the more time you spend in the presence of the One who loved you first. Every day with him is training for your heart. He is shaping you from the inside — your patience, your tenderness, your willingness to forgive. Not by force. By love.

And a freedom grows from this that the world does not understand. Those who live loved first do not need others to deserve it. You are not dependent on their response to keep loving. That difficult person in your life — the family member who drains you, the coworker who grates on you, the one who will never say thank you — you can love them. Not because you are strong. But because you are not drawing from their well. You are drawing from Someone who never runs dry.

So today, before breakfast, before your phone, before any request or petition — sit in silence for one minute. Just one minute. Ask for nothing. Bring no list. Only repeat, slowly, like someone receiving a gift: He loved me first. He loved me first. And let that be real for you. Receive before you give. Let his love come in before you try to pour yours out.

That is the foundation of everything.

Stay close to God. Pray — then act. I'll see you tomorrow, my friend.
