Day 177 · Friday, June 26
"Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong."1 CORINTHIANS 16:13
Hello, my friend… so glad you're with me today. This is By God's Call — day 177, Firm and Strong.
Paul is writing to a community that is being shaken. Pressure from the outside, doubt from the inside, and the weariness of people who have been carrying their faith for a long time. And it is in that moment — not on a quiet day, but exactly in that moment — that he drives four words in like four pillars: be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. First Corinthians, chapter 16, verse 13.
Four calls. Let each one land.
Be watchful. The one who loves God does not drift through life distracted, my friend. The soul that loves stays awake — alert to what is happening within it and to the hour in which it lives. This isn't anxiety. It is presence. It is the refusal to sleepwalk while the world moves around you. Staying watchful is the first act of someone who takes their faith seriously.
Stand firm in the faith. Not stubbornness — roots. When fear knocks at your door, when everyone's opinion seems louder than the Word, the firm faith is not the one that never doubts. It is the one that, even while trembling, does not pull up its roots. Because roots that grow in Christ hold the soul steady when everything around it shakes. And it will shake. But you do not have to fall.
Act like men. Paul is not speaking only to men — he is speaking to every soul that chooses to move. And courage is not the absence of fear. That does not exist. Courage is the decision to move forward in spite of fear. God does not wait for you to already be brave before He calls you. He gives courage in the moment you say yes. The step is yours; the strength is His.
Be strong. But Paul is not asking you to try harder on your own. The strength he is calling for does not rise from us — it rises from the One who lives within us. We are strong when we stop trusting in our own resolve and begin to lean on grace. Grace is not weakness in disguise. It is the greatest force there is.
And then — almost like a fifth pillar, the most important one of all — Paul adds: let all that you do be done in love. Without love, watchfulness turns to hardness. Courage turns to pride. Strength turns to force. Love does not weaken the four calls that came before it; it purifies them. Love is the measure of everything.
So here is the call for today — and I want you to hear it with everything you have.
There is a situation in your life where you have been backing away. You know the one. Fear spoke louder, the conversation was put off, the step was delayed one more time. Today, you are going to take that step. Not with harshness, not with anger — with firmness and with gentleness. With love for the person who is standing right in front of you. That is the firm step faith is asking of you today.
Stay close to God. Pray — then act. I'll see you tomorrow, my friend.
