Hello, my friend… so good to be with you again today. This is By God's Call — day 161, Sleep in Peace.

"In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety." Psalm 4, verse 8.

This verse was not written on a quiet night. David was not on a peaceful vacation with nothing weighing on him. He was surrounded — real adversaries, people who wanted to see him fall, a tension that did not go away when the sun went down. And that is exactly why these words carry so much weight: he was not describing vacation peace. He was describing peace in the middle of the storm.

Notice the two verbs he uses: "lie down" and "sleep." This is not just resting the body in bed. It is letting the mind go along with it. Because some people lie the body down but spend the whole night awake on the inside — spinning thoughts, replaying problems, calculating everything that could go wrong tomorrow. David is talking about something else. He is talking about a complete surrender, body and mind together, until sleep actually comes.

And where does that ability to let go like that come from? Look at the word he uses: "you alone." This is not safety split between God and a good alarm system. It is not God plus a strong army. It is exclusive. You alone, LORD, make him dwell in safety. Not walls, not guards, not military strategy get the credit here. God alone.

And that completely changes what "safety" means in this verse. Because the danger had not disappeared. The adversaries were still out there the next morning, exactly as they had been before David slept. The safety he felt was not the absence of threat — it was the presence of God. Two very different things. One depends on circumstances changing. The other depends on nothing changing, because it is already anchored in who God is.

And that is why night is so revealing. During the day we get distracted — work, screens, conversation, motion. But at night, in the silence, when your head hits the pillow and there is nothing left to do, that is where what you actually trust shows up. Or where what you don't trust shows up. Insomnia, so often, is not only a problem of the body. It is an unresolved conversation with God about who is actually in control.

So, my friend, let me ask you: what has been keeping you up lately? What worry keeps circling when the house goes quiet? David did not hide this from God — he brought it to God, and said: you alone make me dwell in safety. Not the solution I haven't found. Not the control I don't have. You alone.

So here is today's call: tonight, before you turn off the light, speak this verse out loud. Word by word. And then name for God the specific worry that has been stealing your sleep. Don't leave it to circle alone in the dark. Hand it over. God does not sleep, and He does not need you to stay up doing His job for Him.

Stay close to God. Pray — then act. I'll see you tomorrow, my friend.
